ICUCARE® for Teachers
STUDENT-CENTERED MATH INSTRUCTION
FOR TRANSFORMATIONAL EDUCATORS
WHY THIS COURSE?
Many Teach For America alumni are committed to educational equity but need tools to transform that vision into day-to-day classroom practice—especially in mathematics, where marginalized students are often left behind.
ICUCARE® for Teachers is an 8-lesson, self-paced online course that helps educators move from intention to action. Grounded in the 7 principles of the ICUCARE Equity Framework, the course develops teachers’ capacity to:
✅ Challenge deficit thinking
✅ Use culturally relevant curricula
✅ Build on student strengths
✅ Support deep mathematical sensemaking
✅ Maintain high expectations for all students

WHAT TEACHERS WILL LEARN TO DO:
✔ Include others as experts
Foster student and community agency—beyond the teacher as the only authority.
✔ Be critically conscious
Address and disrupt the impact of negative stereotypes on student outcomes.
✔ Understand students well
Learn students’ cultural and personal knowledge to better tailor instruction.
✔ Use culturally relevant curricula
Empower students as doers of mathematics and counter stereotypes about math ability.
✔ Assess, activate, and build on prior knowledge
Turn what students already know into a resource for rigorous learning.
✔ Release control
Shift power to students through problem-solving, exploration, and voice.
✔ Expect more
Hold high expectations and reject deficit narratives about marginalized learners.
